Vivian was born in 1938 in Tacoma, Washington. She began learning piano at age six, but switched to violin three years later. She met her future husband, Phil Williams, at Reed College and joined him in the folk music and international folk dance activities there. They moved to Seattle after college, and a fellow musician introduced them to bluegrass musicians in Darrington. Before long the Williams were joining in the weekend sessions at Fred and Alice McFalls home. Most of the Darrington musicians played banjo, guitar or mandolin and sang. A few could play some fiddle. As Vivian puts it, "I was a total freak because I was female musician and an outsider, but I was accepted because I was the fiddler." Before long Vivian and Phil had formed a band, The Turkey Pluckers, the first of many. They discovered the contest circuit and Vivian began collecting prizes. They helped found a number of organizations to provide a forum for the music they loved: the Seattle Folklore Society, Northwest Folklife, and the Washington Old Time Fiddlers Association. Along the way they installed a recording studio in their basement and began recording local fiddlers under their Voyager label. |
